Hide your Administrator

2009-04-08_securityOne technique hackers use to determine if you're using a website content management system is to simply search your site for commonly used back-end access addresses such as /admin or in the case of Joomla /administrator. You can hide your Joomla Administrator login page by using an extension called jSecure Authentication.

This simple extension requires you to add a word that you specify to the Administrator address. So if you choose "chocolate-egg" as your word, you would then access your Administrator by going to http://www.yoursite.com/administrator?chocolate-egg. Anyone trying to access your site using http://www.yoursite.com/administrator will be redirected to an error page or your home page.

Hello Richard,

I have 3 joomla sites and used netfirms as my server. recently I have misplaced
the admin password and went to netfirms to us their old reliable control panel
to reset the admin password. However they have changed their ownership and
now use a different control panel. they no longer support joomla admin password
reset.

Is there any way using file manager or ftp to allow the password to be reset?

thanks,

garwin

You can't change the password using file manager or FTP. But you can change it in the database. Hosts usually provide a tool called phpMyAdmin and I have a post with a video that demonstrates how to reset the Joomla Administrator password. This is a little old now so the interface might look different, but the principle is the same. Just make sure you make a backup first!

I was planning to do this but the link provided to jSecure Authentication seems to be dead and I can't find it elsewhere. Any ideas?

I have updated the link. But note that since writing this article, this extension has become commercial only.
