5 important questions for your home page

The term bounce rate is the percentage of people who arrive at a page on your site but don't view any other pages. This is a great metric to measure using Google Analytics because it shows if you are attracting the right people and most importantly, if you are doing a good job convincing them to look at your site.

Not surprisingly, your home page is usually the most popular entry point. Visitors often arrive here while they are comparing your site with other similar sites so you need to make a good impression - FAST! Your visitor wants to know if your site will solve their challenge so try to answer the following 5 questions:

  1. who are you?
  2. what do you do?
  3. how do you do this differently from everyone else who does what you do?
  4. why should I do business with you?
  5. how do I do business with you?

I'm putting the final touches on a basic web design package and the introductory text I am using is:

We build websites using a unique “do-it-together” approach that has been refined over the last 13 years. By watching our series of free, step-by-step online videos, you will develop a web plan that exceeds your goals and your site can be up and running in as little as 48 hours. Your accountant will be amazed at how much you saved on your website by following our simple, step-by-step formula. It costs nothing to get started so click here for free access to the videos and get ready to save up to 90%.

It is hard work to sell someone with just a few sentences so that's not my goal. I want visitors to click on the link which takes them to a page with a video and registration form. And that's usually the goal for most home pages; convince your visitor that you are the solution to their problem and encourage them to click through to another page. And although I'm talking about business sites, the same principle applies to most sites:

Amateur Sports Club: Springfield Soccer is your local club for weekend soccer - ages 9 to 60 ...

Charity: we provide online resources to help you learn more about XYZ ...

Personal site: join me to learn more about the walks of northern Sydney ...

Action Points

1. Set-up Google Analytics on your site. Use this Joomla extension.
2. Measure your bounce rate for a week. Then try and improve your home page text and see if your bounce rate improves.
