When I met Joomla, I had no idea how much it would impact my future. The relationship was frosty at first. Hostile in fact. I was happy the way things were, but Joomla insisted that life could be even better, if I was prepared to make some changes. The problem was, the path to our ultimate happiness required a solution that had not yet been built. And it was up to me to produce the solution. Okay - sure, Joomla did provide the materials, but no cohesive way of moulding it all together.

I made a tentative approach, but was sternly rebuked. Something about having inadequate permissions. I tried again but couldn't find a way to have even the most simple of conversations. Sadly we parted and I went back to my long-term partner, Dreamweaver.

But I knew I was missing out on something. It nagged me day and night until I decided to try again. It was easier this time. Things started to look bright and I was optimistic that I had found my lifelong partner. But alas we fell at the final hurdle. We had come so far, surely something seemingly so small as a menu item couldn't come between us. But is was so. And so tragically we separated again.

This time my reunion with my previous HTML editor was not so pleasant. We were never right for each other. So I knuckled down with a new determination to use the few resources I had to build a Joomla website. The details aren't important. All you need to know is that everything finally came together and now Joomla and I are best of friends.

I want you to enjoy this friendship too, so I have produced a methodical step-by-step solution to learning Joomla. Start with our free course The Basics. Then move on to our advanced courses. I also publish hints and tips via this blog. Your first steps might also be tentative, but with my help, you are guaranteed to save a lot of time and frustration.

SuperBlogger

Although Joomla can display articles like a blog, to get full blogging features requires you to install one or more extensions. The new SuperBlogger extension from JoomlaWorks includes many nice blogging features such as comments, social bookmarking and ratings. This is a commercial extension but at just €7 it is a bargain.

JAdmin!

Here's a new extension worth a look, particularly if you manage more than one Joomla site. JAdmin! is a desktop tool that works with Windows or Linux. You can access any part of your Administrator with just one click.

Change your Administrator username

During the Joomla 1.5 installation process, you specify a password but the username is automatically assigned as 'admin'. Most people don't bother changing this which weakens your security as hackers already know half of your login details.

Linux chooses Joomla

There are some pretty big sites that have chosen to use Joomla as their CMS. The Linux Foundation has recently relaunched their site and they too have chosen Joomla along with several extensions.

Joomla Surveys

This week I needed to create a simple survey. I could have just created a form but I wanted a better way of displaying the results. I opted for bfSurvey as there was a free version I could try and a commercial version with the features I needed.

Viewing template positions

In the Build a Joomla Website training, you learn how to view your template positions in Administrator. However there are times when it would be handy to be able to do this quickly in the front-end. You do this by adding ?tp=1 to the end of your home page URL.

Adding code to an article

A common question we receive is how to add raw HTML code to an article. Sometimes you might like to incorporate Flash, JavaScript or other HTML code into a Joomla article but find that the code is stripped or altered when you save the article. This is a safety mechanism built-in to the HTML editor to prevent you or anyone you allow to write articles containing bad or malicious code. If you are using the standard HTML editor that is supplied with Joomla, you can turn off this mechanism as follows.

We've recently updated this information for Joomla 2.5

Joomla Showcase

I have mentioned the showcase forum at Joomla before but now there is a dedicated home for showing off your Joomla sites. The Joomla Showcase is a great place to check out what others are doing with Joomla. There are already over 200 listings and if you think your site is worthy, you should request it to be included.

456,000 results for "Welcome to the Frontpage"

I have had a few emails from people asking how to change the title tag on the home page. By default this reads "Welcome to the Frontpage". Out of interest, I searched Google for this phrase and got 456,000 results! Most of these are sites that haven't changed this default setting so let's have a look at how it's done.

This post includes a video tutorial.

Hide your Administrator

One technique hackers use to determine if you're using a website content management system is to simply search your site for commonly used back-end access addresses such as /admin or in the case of Joomla /administrator. You can hide your Joomla Administrator login page by using an extension called, jSecure Authentication.
