Redirection to a mobile website

0
I have just been looking at Richard's video on the foregoing, I want to redirect a smartphone user to my mobile website. I have viewed the Video on Redirection and downloaded the code from www.detectmobilebrowsers.mobi, extracted example-4.php but I am not sure from the video where to upload the modified code too, is it placed in the header or somewhere else.

Having viewed the video again, Richard says to upload to the home page, which I assume means the non mobile home page, not sure what he means by this? Can anyone help.

I have solved this problem, I can now get the smartphone user to be directed to the mobile website. Unfortunately, if the a PC user visits the site there are error messages, back to the drawing board.

    G'day Mike!

As read you, what you want to do is create your own website which can be viewed optimally on a PC and on a mobile device. Is this correct?

If so, you're going about it the wrong way. Richard's system is for another purpose.

You simply need to install the Mobile Joomla extension (from the JED) on your regular site and configure it. Easy peasy, Mate!

    Hello Laurie
I hear what you say, I am trying to use Richard's method of redirection and that seems to be ware my problems is. I am not using Mobile Joomla but a normal website, that is true, but looking at the tutorial I would still need to use something like the functions of www.detectmobilebrowers.mobi or have I misunderstood lesson 4?

Richard's system is for the purpose explained in his tutorial about one method of getting web creation business. It's not for building your own site with both PC and mobile templates.

Are we on the same page here, Mate? I understood from what you said that you want a site that looks good on both a PC and a smartphone. This is not what Richard's system is about.

If this is what you want, you just install the Joomla Mobile extension on the site and configure it. This extension is not Richard's download.

Please explain just what you are trying to accomplish.

I have watched Richard's video a number of times, he recommends using a subdomain, in my case it would be, www.m.mightec.com or a new domain with a .mobi extension. In either case he recommends that you insert a new script into the index page of the non-mobile website, you get the script from www.detectmobilebrowsers.mobi. This is what I am trying to do.

Are you saying that I don't need to do any of this and all I need to do is upload Joomla Mobile extension and that if a smartphone user try's to access my main site they will automatically get switched to my mobile website in the subdomain.

If that is the case, I owe you one, thanks Mate!

I think you are on the right track and Laurie hasn't quite grasped what you've done (as we've emailed each other about it, he's at a slight disadvatage!). You've got your regular, non-mobile site - mightec.com - and you've already created your mobile site as a sub-domain - m.mightec.com.

What you want to do is redirect mobile 'phone users from your mightec site to m.mightec For that you follow the instructions (as you are) in the fourth video - Redirection. Unless you want to start playing with WURFL that means paying for the code from detectmobilebrowsers.mobi (as you've done).

As you own and operate both sites, there's no problem in regard to inserting the code in mightec.com ie uploading the php file to the root directory of mightec and then the code to the mightec Home page.

Having done all that - you're getting the error message you attached below and what you want to know is how to get rid of it. Am I right so far?

I have a feeling the problem is caused by the home page php file being in the wrong place. Heaven (and everyone on this board!) knows how much I love programming, but I think the instruction has to be higher up the page ie before the original header code.

This forum post explains it: http://www.phpbuilder.com/board/showthread.php?t=10310794

Close Mate, but simpler than that.

You don't need the second site in the subdomain. Flush it down the dunny! Get away from Richard's tutorial; it's for a different purpose.

See the other post where I've just now tried my darnedest to explain the two ideas. They are related but separate systems.

    G'day Laurie

How's the hacker situation? Hope you're getting on top of it.

As I mentioned earlier, Mike and I have been in contact over this and he has commercial reasons for wanting to set up the m.mobile sub domain site rather than just optimize his own site for mobile, which is why he is persisting with it.

So, you're right - there's an easier way, it's just that's not what he wants to do. At least, I don't think so!

    Ah! The hacker situation!

Well, it's going pretty slow. I have my grandson here for the school holidays and we've been for a motorbike ride in the bush, today.

And I can scarcely get at my puter anyway. He's downloaded this game thingy and I can't get him off it.

But the joy of doing blokey stuff together far outways any silly old website stuff! I'd have had maybe a dozen conversations today with Nicky that each amount to more than any I had with my grandfather in the 18 years that he missed the opportunities.

Well, if Mike wants to add a mobile site to an existing site that he has no control over, then Richard's system is the way to go, but if he's built the original site on the Joomla platform, then give the system a miss and do it the easy way.

As a practice for Richard's system, hopefuls should connect their mobile site to a free WP, Yola or SiteBuilder site. Can they advise the original site builder on how to add the redirect code to these sites?

What is the other posting, can you give me a link to it, please. I will give it ago, I thought that Richard's tutorial was the way to go, but if not I will follow your lead. What is Richard's tutorial all about then? Thanks.

Hi Mike, I wanted to thank you for the direction to Carousel Images, it will look great on a couple of my sites. I just looked at your site and the code is back at the top.

I did want to mention a neat little trick with Carousel. If you create a GIF instead of a JPG or PNG image file, the first image is what spins on the Carousel. When you click on it, it starts the Gif type action. The after images can be text or anything that even simulates a slideshow action. I've found the GIF's work faster and easier than many of the more complicated videos or slides.
Just thought I would pass it on to everyone.

    Hi Laurie/Les

Sorry with this late response, I have been off line since Friday's conversation, I got blocked from the forum, like having my right arm cut off.

Laurie, I have looked at the link and now fully understand the capability of the Mobile Joomla extension, I will give it some thought, with what I am trying to do.

Les, glad that you like the AIR Carousel plugin, and thanks for your advise on the use of GIF files.
