Limiting the size of URLs
Hi Guys
I have recently attended some Google workshops in my area and they say that its best to minimise the length of URLs in order for the search engines to pick them up more quickly ( i.e. www.mysite.com/homepage - without all the stuff like /index.php/54678? etc that gets attached to the URL. I'm really not too sure how to do this in Joomla. I know that in Wordpress there is a little button that does the job for you.... do any of you know if there is a similar way to do this in Joomla. I
Thanks
Sue

Hi Sue
Richard covers this pretty thoroughly in the videos - just can't remember where! Probably in the SEO section of the Pro videos. Follow his advice for the necessary tweaks in Global Configuration.
There are also extensions available in the JED - http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/site-management/sef - sh404SEF is probably the best known.

Yes! It's under Site>Global Configuration>Site>SEO Settings.
Set the top line to Yes.
The second line, be sure to follow the instructions about the .htaccess file and then choose Yes.
Third line No.
Richard covers it all in detail in Global Configuration in the Joomla Pro series of video tutorials.

SEO out-of-the-box improved with Joomla 1.6 (now 2.5). But for full control, you may still wish to use a third party SEF extension. Our Pro videos demonstrate sh404SEF, but my current recommendation is AceSEF.

Thank you Laurie and Richard.
I'll make time to look at the videos again this week and learn my lessons properly
I have some time off to myself this week so plan to catch up on all those things I keep meaning to do, so I'll probably drive you all mad with my questions and problems.
I didn't actually realise there is so much help out there with SEO.... its one thing that totally mystifies me still although I know the basic concept of it.
Whilst I have your attention Richard... is there any plan in the future to add some items on social media.... I keep hearing that I ought to buy into this in a big way too but its just another thing that takes so much time.
Thanks for your help

Social media is important but I do not have any immediate plans to produce any training on this as it is outside the scope of Joomla. I do have a domain and a plan of attack for this, but it's going to be several months before I can get to it.
In the first instance, create a blog and set it to auto publish posts to your various channels. You can do this with EasyBlog. -
Thanks for the advice Richard. By the way I looked at my Joomla Pro Videos today and found the one with all the info on SEO which is great.
I don't have a blog at the moment... and not sure what I would say on it really ... but I will have a go at creating one. To be honest I'm a bit of a dinasaur as I haven't really used any of the social media sites much yet - but of course this is on my list of things I must get around to. Really looking forward to any training you produce though!

I'm a fan of fellow Australian Darren Rowse who runs ProBlogger. Lots of great resources for learning to blog effectively.
