The main benefit of using CSS in web design is the fact that it is possible to separate the visual or layout aspects of a web page from the actual content. It is then possible to focus solely on the presentation of content, such as colors, fonts, backgrounds, margins and white space.

CSS can also be used to control structural elements like columns, headers and footers, and it has made the use of HTML tables for page structure unnecessary.

As CSS develops and advances, such as with CSS3, more and more can be done. Currently, the combination of HTML5 and CSS3 are rapidly becoming the web standard.
