The major use of the term content relates to Joomla articles. These items appear in the main part of the page and are managed in the Joomla Administrator under Article Manager. We like to refer to these items as the Primary Content - that is the main content that appears on the page.

But there are a multitude of potential Secondary Content items that can appear in other parts of the page. Examples include:

  • supporting text such as a phone number
  • images - photos, illustrations etc.
  • audio files
  • videos
  • interactive elements

Joomla sites can include modules that provide functions such as a form, a login facility, a search box, navigation menus and more. It is arguable whether or not these items fall into the definition of content or not, because they provide function rather than information.

Our free Joomla tutorial course - The Basics - teaches you how to create Joomla content items.

Hello Richard,

I like the glossary idea and I want to make a suggestion.

Are you familiar with Moodle? There is a glossary "module" (in moodle it's called an activity) where the administrator can allow students to add glossary entries. This is sometimes used to allow students to introduce themselves by putting a photo of themselves along with a brief description. This way everyone gets to see a profile of each other.

So, just an idea, you could allow members to add glossary entries. You could the approve each one and tweak them out by adding photos (or allow the user to upload photos).
This would take the burden of having to do each entry yourself.

I know that Moodle exists and that there is a way for it to play nicely with Joomla, but I have never used it.

As much of our audience are Joomla beginners, I'm sceptical that allowing them to contribute this sort of content would be helpful.

In regards to allowing people to introduce themselves, I've been thinking about this too, so I have started a post in our forum for this purpose: http://www.buildajoomlawebsite.com/forum/main-forum/introductions

Thanks for the suggestion.

Bulkmail, email client, email server, mass email tool? I know email client and server are not the right terms. In my Dotcom start-up enterprise app (back in 1997) we had something we called a "bulkmail" tool (bunch of Pearl scripts). The "marketing" lesson punts the issue to "Constant Contact" which is a pay service. I need a more efficient way to send my mass mailing out to my group and I can't find the right extension in the JED. So I am not sure if I am using the right term to search. Perhaps a glossary item on group email terms could help. Keep up the good work!

I'm not sure of the best term either - especially as it relates to Joomla. As much of the email distribution I do is for business, the term I use is Email Marketing. But Bulk Mail tends to get used a lot too. Thanks, I'll keep this in mind.
