Review: Tienda Ecommerce

We have just completed a 15 part series of tutorials on how to build a Joomla powered eCommerce site using an extension called Tienda. Advanced subscribers can login to the site and watch these now.

Tienda is a new extension by Dioscouri. It's officially still in beta but it is stable enough to start using now.

Tienda ecommerce for Joomla

The good

  • Tienda is already a sophisticated eCommerce solution and will suit many types of online shops.
  • It includes many pricing options such as different price groups (e.g. you could provide a different price for resellers), different price points based on the number ordered (e.g. if you order 1 the price is $20, if you order 2 it becomes $18 each) and different pricing based on dates (useful for promotions).
  • Products can include attributes such as different colors, sizes etc.
  • There is a lot of flexibility when it comes to creating tax and shipping rules.
  • Some template providers have released compatible templates (e.g. joomlabamboo, Joomla Praise and RocketTheme)

The not so good

  • It is beta and there are some issues. For example, the product entry pages would not work for us using Google Chrome but switching to Firefox worked. One of the modules refused to work and there are some mistakes in a couple of menu item descriptions. None of these are deal breakers though.
  • Documentation is always the last consideration with software and so you could argue that as Tienda is still classed as beta, that it is a bonus to have any help at all. There are some decent installation instructions and other documentation, but this is certainly an area that requires more work. If you have never built an online shop before, you may struggle – but that's where our tutorials come in!
  • Support is a difficult subject to tackle with any project. There is a forum on the developer site, but many problems are unanswered. Dioscouri has chosen to provide the community version of Tienda for free which is admirable, but support costs $99.99 for just one month.

Rating

4 out of 5

Conclusion

We like Tienda which is why we chose it for our eCommerce tutorials. It shows good potential and is reasonably safe to use now. We would like to see better support or a cheaper paid option.

This company portrays a very professional look and feel but dont get caught paying for services that do not help...

You will have to pay for support to get their components to work that for sure. Its like a beautiful system they have to make money off of customers looking for shopping cart solutions. And please dont get me wrong I am happy to pay for good developed components / plugins...
I spent over $200.00 on the Tienda and Juga components. They will turn around and say the software has bugs and is in beta. I even paid $20.00 more then I was suppose to pay for support.
My big issue was the time between support tickets... way too long.

Also when you look at their stats of what the cart can do it looks perfect. Subscriptions, coupons.... but remember it's in BETA so it is not all true!

I simple wanted to have products with coupons. This means coupons per product at a set rate not percent. What will happen is you add the item to cart place the coupon code and it shows in the shopping cart but now when a user goes to complete the payment process the discount gets removed form the cart.

I did find the best solution for free using this method.
(1) Install good old VirtueMart
(2) Awo Coupon for VirtueMart

Now I would not be telling the world how terrible my experience has been if the Dioscouri company had given me a full refund like I asked.

Really sets the tone to watch what you are buying for Joomla.

Maybe. I've gone off Tienda a bit since writing this post because they have been slow to release a 1.7 version. I am watching the development of a couple of other options and will decide later which one (or two) to support.

Hello! Thanks for interesting review. Don't you know, is there any solution for product entry pages in Chrome?

You can also not use SEF urls or a SEF module with it.
Although they claim that it will work with joomla core sef, it does't.
Also, if you have something in your shopping cart already and try and view a product, you get a server error 500. Besides that, I like. Lots of pottential if they get it right.
